Australian Centipedes

Australia has 5 orders of centipedes inhabiting its environments, Scolopendramorpha, Geophilomorpha, Craterostigmorpha, Lithobiomorpha, Scutigeramorpha.

I focus on the most well known and diverse group, the 'Giant Centipedes' - Scolopendridae.

Centipedes are ferocious predators and practically rule the underworld. They can easily take animals as large as them such as small mice, lizards and frogs. They are also known to feed on larger roadkill animals.

Centipedes have powerful venom and although none of the Australian centipedes are considered lethal to humans, their bite can cause severe pain and discomfort for weeks.

Scolopendra morsitans

Australia has several genera of Scolopendridae - Arthrorhabdus, Asanada, Colobopleurus, Cormocephalus. Ethmostigmus. Notiasemus, Otostigmus, Rhysida and Scolopendra.

To determine the genus and species of a centipede, several taxonomic differences need to be observed such as tooth length, spines on the terminal legs, spiracle size and shape, antenna length, leg spines and more.

I will be simple on this page and only show pictures of the centipedes I have photographed so far, as I hope to one day write a field guide on centipedes which will including diagnostic features.
